Founded in 2007, Gallim Dance is a New York-based contemporary dance company dedicated to creating and performing original work by Andrea Miller, nurturing the careers of young artists, and stimulating the imagination of a diverse, international audience. Miller’s work embodies fearless physicality, grounded by deep humanity and expressed through the madness and joy of the imagination.
Gallim quickly caught the attention of the dance community with its visceral movement, resonant imagery, and award-winning ensemble of dancers. Miller’s work has been acclaimed by the New York Times as “voluptuously polyglot choreography”, performed by dancers “of the highest calibre” (Dance Europe). In 2012, the company was honored for ‘movement innovation’ at a TEDx Conference. The company performs for over 15,000 audience members annually in premier venues that include New York City Center, the Joyce Theater, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Spoleto Festival, White Bird, the TANZ Bremen Festival in Germany and Madrid en Danza in Spain.
Artistic highlights in 2013 include a new commission from Montclair State University’s Peak Performances Series, for the creation of a new work titled Fold Here. Fold Here will preview at Guggenheim Works & Process in September, and premiere at Peak Performances Series later that month. Additional support for the creation process has been provided by Sadler’s Wells and by Dancer’s Workshop in Jackson Hole. Gallim Dance will also make its Brooklyn Academy of Music debut in May of 2013, with six performances of Blush in the inaugural season of the BAM Fisher Theater. International tours will include performances at the Theatre National de Chaillot in Paris, France, the Festspiele Ludwigshafen in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and the Festival Tanztage in Linz, Austria.
In January 2012, Gallim Dance established its new permanent home in a historical landmark building in Brooklyn, NY, where it hosts year-round education and performance programs. Gallim’s education branch serves both dancers and non-dancers through weekly classes, specialized movement workshops, artist residencies, and monthly performing arts series. Gallim also mentors students of the Brooklyn-based Dancewave School, who performed Gallim Dance repertory at Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out in August, and were featured in the New York Times.
In its 2012 season, Gallim Dance was a recipient of the New York City Center Choreography Fellowship, the Joyce Theater Foundation Residency Program, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music Professional Development Program. Gallim also received meaningful support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, First Republic Bank, the Harkness Foundation for Dance, the Charles and Joan Gross Family Foundation, the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, the Foundation for Contemporary Art, the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation USArtists International, the Jerome Foundation, and the Tupperware Corporation.
With thanks to the Friends of Gallim Dance for their extraordinary leadership and support:
